Comic Con 09

Comic Con was incredible. The only way I can describe it is Mardi Gras with comic book and scifi fans. Besides having an amazing time meeting people and hearing about projects, I found the whole spectacle inspiring. When you get down to it, Comic Con is all about story – whether in comics, movies, television, or video games. People are there because they feel connected to the stories, so much so that they dress up in character. These guys stood in line for hours to see their favorite actors, writers, and directors in person; to see sneak peeks of movie and television shows. They build communities around their favorites, hold conventions, and write their own stories in fan fiction. Some people make fun of these extreme fans, but I think they are wonderful. They love the stories and characters so much that they want to live them. As creators engendering this devotion is what we should aspire to. Hopefully every person in the theater is swept away to the world we created and doesn’t want to come back. For myself, I am and always will be a movie geek first. I want every movie and TV show I see to be good. We must never forget that the audience is rooting for us to entertain them. Despite years of working in the business, when the lights go down in the theater, I still get butterflies wondering where I am going to be taken. And when the lights come up I feel momentarily let down. It’s back to the real world where the good guys don’t always win and true love doesn’t save the day. But there is always the next movie…

I think what I love about these kinds of conventions is the community. People are already connected without having to get to know each other. Must have been a blast.
